What Causes the ugly roof Stains?

You've probably noticed that your roof stains appear on your North-facing roof. Sunlight obstructions, such as overhangs, shade trees, or even a northern exposure provide perfect conditions for the unsightly build-up of moss, fungus, and algae.

Here in Dayton, Ohio, climactic conditions allow moisture to be retained on all or at least some portions of your roof. The life expectancy of your roof can be shortened considerably because of this condition which promotes the growth of destructive moss, fungus and algae.

Your roof's overall appearance can look inconsistent - what seems to be "weathering" may very well be green, white, or black patches of fungus discoloring the roof surface an breaking down its fibers.

Moss, fungus, and algae can penetrate wood or composition roof surfaces - weakening fibers, wearing off the grits, and curling, rounding, or cracking off corners. If allowed to build up heavily, moss, fungus, algae can even lift the shingles.

Once your roof is cleaned and restored to its original beauty, or if you already have a new roof, you'll want to consider having us install Zinc Strips to keep it from reoccurring

Zinc Strips Installed on an Existing RoofZinc Strips

Copeland Roofing now installs Zinc strips

Zinc strips are applied to new roofs or roofs that are clean of fungus, moss, or algae growth. Zinc strips are designed to inhibit growth of moss, fungus, and algae on roof surfaces.

How do Zinc Strips Work?

Zinc strips interrupt the flow of rain and naturally time-releases fungistatic compounds of zinc oxide which travel evenly down the roof slope. These compounds are absorbed by the roof surface and inhibit the growth of moss, fungus, and algae --not kill it.

Once installed, the zinc strip will quickly weather to pewter gray. Only 2 inches is actually exposed, so it is difficult to see from the ground. Remember, the alternative is an unsightly, badly stained roof.

This "natural process" is of low toxicity. Zinc oxide compounds wash and protect the roof, with no visible sign of this action.
